It’s easier said than done to replace time spent scrolling on social media with other passive (“lazy”) activities.
Especially considering that many of us use social media as an outlet to unwind after a long day or when we’re bored.
Here are 12 “Lazy” activities that you can do in replace of scrolling through social media.

1. Read a Book
- Take advantage of public libraries and borrow free books.
- If you prefer digital, you can find free ebook collections in your public library’s directory or on book platforms such as Project Gutenberg.
2. Work on Puzzles
Some popular brain activities that help to keep the brain juices flowing:
- Jigsaw
- Scrabble
- Word search
- Sudoku
3. Listen to a Podcast
You can find a podcast relating to almost anything, from food to religion and sports.

4. Painting
If you don’t mind producing a little bit of mess and potentially getting your hands dirty, try painting.
From creating large abstract patterns to simply flickering the paint on the canvas, my favorite part about painting is that I can paint over my existing work once it dries.
5. Video chat a Loved one
Go one step further from texting and video chat and talk to a friend/family member.
6. Go on a Learning App
From language learning on Duolingo to trivia apps, educational apps can provide a light workout and quick stimulation for your mind.
7. Coloring
Coloring is not just for kids. From crayons and colored pencils, to digitally coloring on your tablet, coloring forces us to slow down and concentrate on one thing—Filling in the lines.
8. Look up Recipes
Discover new recipes on Google and YouTube and find inspiration for your next meal.
9. Journal
Journaling is a great outlet to organize your thoughts, ideas, schedule, meals, goals, and much more.
Whether you’re interested in a traditional diary format or a bullet journal, there are a lot of videos on YouTube on how to get started.
10. Meditate
The term meditation can be different for everyone.
For me personally, meditation is any activity that aids in quieting my mind.
Some meditation activities can Include:
- Time spent reading the Bible
- Sitting outside and basking in the fresh air
- Deep breathing exercises
11. Stretch
From chair yoga to a complete full body workout, get active and stretch your body.
12. Digitally Clean Your Phone
- Update/organize music playlists
- Delete old screenshots
- Delete duplicate photos
- Uninstall unused apps
- Organize home screen
